El Buena Vista Social Club fue un club social que estaba ubicado en el populoso barrio de Marianao en la ciudad de La Habana que reun\u00eda a un grupo de socios que practicaban actividades relacionadas con la m\u00fasica y la danza y que gozaba de gran popularidad en Cuba. Se convirti\u00f3 en un lugar de encuentro obligado para los m\u00fasicos de la \u00e9poca. Importantes m\u00fasicos como el bajista Cachao L\u00f3pez, Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez y Rub\u00e9n Gonz\u00e1lez tocaron en el club durante las d\u00e9cadas de 1930 y 1940.<\/p>\n
En 1996, un grupo de legendarios m\u00fasicos cubanos, muchos de ellos ex integrantes de ese club, donde actuaron cuando su popularidad estaba en su apogeo, entre ellos Ibrahim Ferrer (fallecido en 2005 a los 78 a\u00f1os), el cantante, Compay Segundo ( fallecido en 2003 a los 95 a\u00f1os) y Eliades Ochoa, (guitarrista\/cantante), el pianista Rub\u00e9n Gonz\u00e1lez Fontanills (fallecido en 2003 a los 84 a\u00f1os), Omara Portuondo, entre otros, fueron convocados por el m\u00fasico cubano Juan de Marcos Gonz\u00e1lez y el guitarrista norteamericano Ry Cooder para grabar en los Estudios EGREM.<\/p>\n
Este \u00e1lbum fue comercialmente muy exitoso y cr\u00edticamente inesperado, ganando un Grammy y convirti\u00e9ndose en el trabajo m\u00e1s vendido de la larga carrera de Cooder. En 1998 Cooder regresa a La Habana con su hijo Joaquim, percusionista, para grabar un LP en solitario con Ferrer. Las sesiones fueron capturadas en la pel\u00edcula por el cineasta alem\u00e1n Wim Wenders, quien tambi\u00e9n document\u00f3 las taquilleras presentaciones en vivo del Buena Vista Social Club en Amsterdam y Nueva York en 1998. El documental tambi\u00e9n incluye entrevistas con los m\u00fasicos realizadas en La Habana. La pel\u00edcula de Wenders, tambi\u00e9n titulada Buena Vista Social Club, gan\u00f3 una nominaci\u00f3n al Oscar en 2000 y el Premio al Mejor Documental en los European Film Awards.<\/p>\n

El \u00e9xito del disco y la pel\u00edcula despertaron el inter\u00e9s internacional por la m\u00fasica tradicional cubana y la m\u00fasica latinoamericana en general. Algunos de los m\u00fasicos cubanos publicaron posteriormente discos en solitario que fueron bien recibidos y otros fueron grabados en colaboraci\u00f3n con varias estrellas de la m\u00fasica internacional de diferentes g\u00e9neros. El nombre \u201cBuena Vista Social Club\u201d se convirti\u00f3 en un t\u00e9rmino inclusivo para este tipo de presentaciones y lanzamientos colaborativos, adem\u00e1s de relacionarse con una etiqueta que engloba la \u201cEdad de Oro de la m\u00fasica cubana\u201d, entre las d\u00e9cadas de 1930 y 1950.<\/p>\n
Actualmente el club est\u00e1 ubicado en La Habana Vieja y algunos de los integrantes de esa legendaria agrupaci\u00f3n, como Omara Portuondo y Eliades Ochoa, tocan y cantan junto a una nueva generaci\u00f3n de talentosos m\u00fasicos amantes de este g\u00e9nero musical cubano.<\/p>\n
