The Buena Vista Social Club was a social club that was located in the populous\u00a0Marianao\u00a0neighborhood in Havana\u00a0city that gathered a group of members that practiced activities related to music and dance and that enjoyed wide popularity in Cuba.\u00a0It became an obligatory meeting place for the musicians of that time.\u00a0Important musicians as bassist\u00a0Cachao L\u00f3pez\u00a0,\u00a0Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez\u00a0and Rub\u00e9n Gonz\u00e1lez played at the club during the\u00a01930s\u00a0and\u00a01940s\u00a0.<\/p>\n
In\u00a01996,\u00a0a group of legendary Cuban musicians, many of them former members of that club, where they performed when their popularity was at their peak, including\u00a0Ibrahim Ferrer\u00a0(who died in\u00a02005\u00a0at the age of 78), singer,\u00a0Compay Segundo\u00a0(died in\u00a02003\u00a0at the age of 95) and\u00a0Eliades Ochoa, (guitarist\/singer), the pianist\u00a0Rub\u00e9n Gonz\u00e1lez Fontanills\u00a0(died in\u00a02003\u00a0at the age of 84),\u00a0Omara Portuondo, among others, were summoned by the Cuban musician\u00a0Juan de Marcos Gonz\u00e1lez\u00a0and the North American guitarist\u00a0Ry Cooder to record at\u00a0EGREM\u00a0Studios.<\/p>\n
This album was commercially highly successful and critically unexpected, earning a\u00a0Grammy\u00a0and becoming the best-selling work of Cooder’s long career.\u00a0In\u00a01998\u00a0Cooder returned to Havana with his son Joaquim, percussionist, to record a solo LP with Ferrer.\u00a0The sessions were captured in the film by German filmmaker\u00a0Wim Wenders, who also documented the blockbuster live performances of the Buena Vista Social Club in\u00a0Amsterdam\u00a0and\u00a0New York\u00a0in\u00a01998.\u00a0The documentary also includes interviews with the musicians carried out in\u00a0Havana.\u00a0Wenders’ film, also titled Buena Vista Social Club, won an Oscar nomination in\u00a02000\u00a0and the Best Documentary Award at the European Film Awards.<\/p>\n

The success of the album and the film sparked international interest in traditional Cuban music and Latin American music in general.\u00a0Some of the Cuban musicians later released solo albums that were well received and others were recorded in collaboration with various international music stars of different genres.\u00a0The name “Buena Vista Social Club” became an inclusive term for this type of collaborative presentation and launch, in addition to being related to a label that encompasses the “Golden Age of Cuban music”, between the\u00a01930s\u00a0and\u00a01950s.<\/p>\n
Nowadays the club is located in Old Havana and some of the members of that legendary group, such as Omara Portuondo and Eliades Ochoa play and sing along with a new generation of talented musicians who love this Cuban\u00a0musical genre.<\/p>\n
