El Son data de finales del siglo XIX. Comenz\u00f3 en los suburbios montunos de algunas ciudades del oriente de Cuba como Guant\u00e1namo, Baracoa, Manzanillo y Santiago de Cuba. Fue la manifestaci\u00f3n bailable m\u00e1s representativa de la poblaci\u00f3n humilde. Se traslad\u00f3 a La Habana hacia 1909 a trav\u00e9s de diferentes migraciones, particularmente de los soldados del ej\u00e9rcito permanente. Fue rechazado en los elegantes salones, pero a medida que crec\u00eda la preferencia popular acab\u00f3 imponi\u00e9ndose a pesar de estas barreras sociales. Se bailaba en dependencias, salones y academias de baile.
Seg\u00fan Odilio Urf\u00e9, destacado music\u00f3logo cubano, el Son \u201ces el exponente sonoro m\u00e1s sincr\u00e9tico de la identidad cultural nacional\u201d. Es un g\u00e9nero vocal, instrumental y bailable, que constituye una de las formas musicales b\u00e1sicas dentro de la m\u00fasica popular cubana. Presenta en su estructura elementos de la m\u00fasica africana, principalmente bant\u00fa, y tambi\u00e9n de la m\u00fasica espa\u00f1ola, pero ya se fusion\u00f3 en un estilo que se define en la m\u00fasica cubana. El Son Cubano suele estar ubicado dentro del complejo sonoro de la zona del Mar Caribe.<\/p>\n

Su primer esplendor fue en los a\u00f1os 20 y 30. Fue interpretado por tr\u00edos, sextetos y septetos. El surgimiento de la legendaria Banda Sexteto Habanero en 1920, m\u00e1s tarde la Banda del Septeto Nacional, dio un enorme boom al Son Cubano. Luego, en 1950, alcanz\u00f3 su mayor difusi\u00f3n con grupos de bandas de jazz y orquestas, que por entonces estaban muy de moda. Las discogr\u00e1ficas le dieron una circulaci\u00f3n ilimitada. Entre los principales autores e int\u00e9rpretes del g\u00e9nero se encuentran: Bienvenido Juli\u00e1n Guti\u00e9rrez, Ignacio Pi\u00f1eiro y Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez, el trompetista F\u00e9lix Chapot\u00edn y el gran Benny Mor\u00e9, quienes fueron determinantes en el progresivo desarrollo e influencia de esta danza popular cubana en el mundo.<\/p>\n

It consisted of guitar, tres (Cuban guitar with six strings), bongo drum, botija or mar\u00edmbula (plucked box instrument), later the contrabass, clefs and maracas. In 1927 the trumpet was incorporated, and since then it has been called the Septet. Currently the format to interpret it is unlimited.<\/p>\n
En toda la isla se desarrollaron diferentes variantes del son: chang\u00fc\u00ed (Guant\u00e1namo), sucu sucu (Isla de la Juventud), Son pantom\u00edmico campesino (en Majagua y Las Tunas) y Son Habana, entre otros. Sin embargo, desde el punto de vista coreogr\u00e1fico, existen dos estilos fundamentales de interpretaci\u00f3n de este g\u00e9nero: el son montuno, que se caracteriza por un pronunciado movimiento del torso hacia los lados, profundas flexiones de las piernas que provocan una constante subida y bajada de el cuerpo, y la frecuente acci\u00f3n de los brazos hacia arriba, identificada por los especialistas en danza como sacando agua del pozo; y el son urbano, cuyos movimientos son m\u00e1s lentos, suaves y elegantes, la posici\u00f3n de baile es m\u00e1s erguida, las flexiones de rodilla son menos pronunciadas y no se realizan los movimientos continuos de brazos descritos anteriormente.<\/p>\n
From the choreographic point of view, the Son is danced by linked couples in a closed and open social dance position, the couple well connected and with accentuated torso and hip movements.
